01 Feb Athens Music Project
The Athens Music Project (AMP) creates a platform for research, creative development, and shared expertise in, about, and for the diverse musical communities that make the city of Athens a unique location both regionally and nationally. Athens serves as a microcosm for multiple musical communities, the most prominent of them being the Southern independent rock scene. However, other areas include a variety of African-American musical traditions, both secular and religious; a growing jazz scene; bluegrass and other folk music traditions; the Latin American/Latino musical community; new music and conceptual sound art, as well as Athens’ historic role in both classical music and musical theater. AMP supports faculty and student research and creative activity, integrates critical engagement with the local community into the curriculum, and promotes a better understanding of the diverse and multifaceted nature of music in Athens and its role in the social, political, and economic life of the city and the state.
